Zelensky is pushing for a meeting with Putin and says he’s ready to talk about the “occupied territories.”

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky declared this Monday that “the end of the war” will not be possible without meeting “in some format” with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and assured that he was ready to talk about it the areas busy”.

“I think that at the moment, without a meeting with the President of the Russian Federation in any format, and I have been repeating and proposing it for several years, without this meeting you cannot really understand what you are willing to do to achieve that stop the war,” said the Ukrainian president.

In this sense, he assured that at this possible meeting with Putin he “is ready to ask questions about the occupied territories”. “They are relevant and very important to us. But I’m sure that decision will not be made at this meeting,” he said, Ukrainian news agencies reported.

For this reason, he insisted that “the first step towards security guarantees and a ceasefire” must first be taken, the Ukrainian president said. “This process, which lasts long enough, will be decided by the Council and the people of Ukraine,” he added.

The President of Ukraine has previously said that in any case, the commitments made with Russia must be ratified by Ukrainian citizens through a referendum. “I have explained to all negotiating groups that if all these changes are discussed, and they can be historic (…), we will get a referendum,” he said.

Heads of Russian and Ukrainian diplomacy met in Ankara on March 10 to reach a ceasefire agreement, although negotiations yielded no result.

Russia has made the annexation of Crimea, the independence of Donetsk and Lugansk and the neutrality of Ukraine a condition for ending its military offensive. This last proposal, not to join NATO, is the only one that Kyiv would accept.
