Zelensky calls on the United Nations to withdraw weapons and “illegal troops” from the Donbass region

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski this Wednesday in his speech to the General Assembly of the United Nations called for the withdrawal of arms and “illegal troops” from the Donbass region as the next step towards peace in this region in eastern Ukraine which was independent in 2014 with Russian support .

Zelenski also called for greater involvement of the international community in order to restore the “unity” of Ukrainian territory to internationally recognized borders, stating that the United Nations should play a relevant role in ending hostilities in the country.

In 2014, Russia annexed Crimea Province and supported independence riots in the Donbass region in response to pro-European demonstrations that toppled President Viktor Yanukovych near the Kremlin in 2013.

Since then, the country has been divided and embroiled in a civil war between the two parties that internally displaced 734,000 people in July 2020, while 3.4 million residents of the region needed humanitarian aid, according to UNHCR.
