You don’t have to be an artist and starve

If you’re an actor, singer, writer, or any kind of artist, you’ve probably been advised countless times to “keep your day job” or “choose a career that really pays the bills”. Sounds familiar?

The truth is that there are ways to indulge your passion and put energy into your talents without having to live below the poverty line.

Jen Rudolph, CEO of The Green room of the actor and creator of The 2% Acting Freedom Formulahelping stakeholders be part of the 2% who receive calls and reservations has seen this transformation hundreds of times with its customers and shares their best practices.

Being a hungry artist is a choice

The hard truth is, you don’t have to be a “starving artist”. It’s a choice.

“The ‘starving artist’ mentality is a way of disempowering yourself and not taking responsibility for your fate,” says Rudolph. This kind of limited belief will actually prevent you from 98% of artists failing.

This is not a test recording, is it? This is your only life. Everyone deserves a real chance to make their dreams come true, and so do you. And it starts with believing in yourself.

If you believe your career is a struggle and you will never make it through it, the more likely it will come true. However, if you really and sincerely believe in yourself and enter auditions with unbeatable confidence, opportunities arise.

Nobody will save you

“The myth of being discovered must be debunked. Nobody comes. There is no lifeboat. Realize that you are the lighthouse. You can be the best actor in the world, but if nobody knows you, it doesn’t matter. This is exactly why creatives and small business owners should think. This means that you are responsible for marketing, branding, production and public relations, ”says Rudolph.

Nobody will save you, but mentors and other experts in their field will help you on your journey. Instead of waiting for a savior, take responsibility now and take your career into your own hands.

If you don’t receive any calls, your product is turned off

“The market will always tell you what you need to know: if you don’t get a call or don’t book, it means that your messages are disabled and / or the effects of your product are unclear,” explains Rudolph.

You are the product. To build that trust that will get you through the door, take the time to research and define what makes you unique. Build your personal brand and you will be unforgettable. With this clarity, you make it impossible for casting directors, labels, agents, or the like to miss you.

You have to do most of the work.

Did you go to a great school? “This does not entitle you to casting directors calling you and / or being hired by an agent and / or manager. In fact, this couldn’t be further from the truth, “says Rudolph.” If you want to go from nameless to star, you need to learn what they fail to teach you in school. “Make this clear: get capital to do a proof of concept or you will get nowhere.

“After an entrepreneur’s Shark Tank speech, the first question Sharks always ask is, ‘What are your sales? ‘”Continues Rudolph, who was on the show.

In short, whoever invests in you wants to see if their product (i.e. you) is already successful in the market, which reduces the risk of investing in you. So, like with any business, keep in mind that you need capital to start between the moment you celebrate your graduation and the moment you can finally live your dreams.
