A lawyer from Bolivia has filed a new lawsuit against former President Jeanine Áñez and her former government minister Arturo Murillo for the alleged unlawful detention and torture of more than 50 people in the context of the political crisis that unleashed after the 2019 elections.

“The prosecution has already accepted this complaint and determined who will be the prosecutor and the investigator,” said the lawyer in question, Nadesdha Guevara, who stressed that the lawsuit against the perpetrators of alleged human rights violations during the administration of Áñez.

When asked about this issue by the Bolivian newspaper Página Siete, former President Luis Guillén’s lawyer stated that they have not yet been informed of the lawsuit, the fourth against Áñez, who has been in the security detention center since March.

Áñez has so far been the subject of four criminal proceedings. The most relevant of these is the so-called “coup d’état”, for which it has been accused of rioting, terrorism and conspiracy because of its role in the post-2019 election crisis.
