In spring 2018 the psychology professor was appointed Yale, Laurie Santos, presented a new course, Psychology and the good life. The topic was happiness.

Santos’ course was a mixture of the abstract and the concrete. He combined positive psychology with real applications of behavioral research. He debunked popular ideas about what makes people happy (as a Mercedes-Benz luxury position symbol) and helped students understand the habits they should develop to lead a truly happier and fuller life.

The course was launched in the United States, where only the 19th happiest population in the world is said to live World Happiness Report 2019, at one of the country’s most elitist and high-pressure universities.

The response was unprecedented. Psychology and the good life (as it is known in English) became the most popular class ever taught in Yale University’s 317 year history and caught the attention of the international media. The university has reportedly had staffing problems and pulled scholars from the School of Public Health and Law School to meet the requirements.

Santos told that New York Times This fourth Yale student took the course. While most major Yale conferences don’t include more than 600 students, Psychology and the good life had registered 1,182.

After a wave of people asked for access to the course, Santos designed an iteration for the Coursera online learning platform called The science of wellbeing, free for non-Yale students. I signed up to see what it was like.

The course covers the following topics in weekly rates:

  • Misunderstandings about happiness.
  • Why our expectations are so bad
  • How can we overcome our prejudices?
  • Things that make us really happy.
  • Put strategies into practice.

Includes video conferencing, optional readings, and “rewiring” activities that are done every day to develop happier habits. Research has shown that making these wiring changes as prescribed should improve your mood and general well-being.

What can you expect from the class?

To make the class warm and inviting, it was filmed in Santos’ own house with a handful of Yale students in the audience so that he could see how the material ended up with other people. It feels intimate and Santos’ tone is friendly and talkative.

Fortunately, there is absolutely no required class for those of us who are particularly interested in this course. All the information you need to know is summarized in the conference. If you want a deeper context, Santos offers links for further reading. And there is no qualification penalty for missing a homework appointment, so you can work at your own pace if you fail to meet the proposed deadlines or not.

In other words, this class is about wellness and it is imperative that you tackle the flood of traditional academy.

My experience with the class

I have to show that I enjoy online courses. In the character strength test to which you were invited at the beginning of the course, “curiosity” was my most dominant feature of its 20 possibilities.

Although I was a less resilient candidate, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the weeks in the course. He felt instantly and concretely useful: the bulk of the preparatory class work is doing daily “reconnection” tasks to incorporate these research-based habits into your life and make you happier after the course.

I liked that

You can check if you are really happier. First, you will be asked to answer two questionnaires to measure your basic happiness. At the end of the course, take it again to see if your score has increased. Hopefully your numbers will improve. This was essential for me. A before and after metric gives a certain abstract theme a certain precision.

  1. There are unexpected benefits. Fortunately, the benchmark survey fortunately seemed useful to me for another reason: I had recently got tired, and the questions they asked helped me to realize for the first time that I was consistently rating part of my life much higher as the others.
  2. What was wrong became obvious. Within the first conference, research gave me the tools to reduce my daily white noise and see clearly where my discontent came from.
  3. The online format is low pressure. He can go back without asking Santos to repeat and he can see conferences again. And there is no pressure to ask or answer questions.
  4. It doesn’t feel like homework. Santos’ lectures make observation easier. After I sat down for a lecture, I wanted to continue. I never felt like forcing myself to do a task, but it satisfied my curiosity.

The only thing to keep in mind is that while you can do classes at your own pace, you are encouraged to implement wiring techniques on a weekly basis, as research has shown that improving your wellbeing requires daily effort on purpose for a long time . Periods – which means that this six-week course is a great opportunity.
