We all know that exercise is important to our health, but did you know that it can also be good for your company? Elizabeth Robinson, personal trainer and developer of the VitFit Fitness app, and Dega Schembri, co-owner of the City Fitness Gym, claim that regular physical activity can even make you a better entrepreneur.

We share seven ways that exercise can improve your company’s health:

1. Establish your contact network

Whether you’re going to a gym or part of a sports team, exercise can help you connect with potential customers and strengthen your business relationships. Robinson met several of his investors and clients during his physical activities. “Many barriers are broken when you train with someone,” he says. With practice, you can communicate with others in a very different way than when you were drinking coffee, for example.

2. Motivate the creative flow

Exercise not only strengthens muscles, but also improves brain performance. A study published by the Montreal Heart Institute in 2012 showed that aerobics increases cognitive function. This is because exercise increases blood flow to the brain, which means that running can be all you need before a brainstorming session.

3. Reduce stress

Physical activity reduces stress hormones and increases the production of endorphins, which give you natural energy. If you exercise in front of the office or during the working day, you can work more calmly. “The more stressed you are, the more unable you are to make good decisions,” says Schembri.

4. Increase your trust

Regardless of whether you are building a company or going through a losing streak, reaching training goals can give you the confidence you need to achieve your career goals. “Having a good practice routine applies to all areas of your life, so you feel more satisfied at the end of the day,” says Robinson.

5. Overcome business challenges

Training for an exercise challenge like a marathon can help entrepreneurs remember the importance of determination and purpose. Schembri participated in her first triathlon at the age of 58, saying that intensive training helped her become a more persistent entrepreneur. Removing the word “impossible” from his vocabulary made it easier for him to see new obstacles as challenges to be overcome.

6. Improve your energy

Put the cup of coffee down and better go to the gym. A study published in the Journal Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics concluded that inactive people who generally complained of tiredness increased energy by 20 percent and reduced tiredness by participating in physical activity by 65 percent. “Regular training helps you sleep better and have more energy,” says Schembri.

7. Learn to delegate control

“A lot of business owners think they have to do everything, but there is too much stress with this level of control, power, and decision making,” says Schembri. “If you hire a personal trainer, you agree that he will lead you,” says Schembri.

By participating in team sports, entrepreneurs can also learn the importance of entrusting tasks to others and show them that they don’t have to do everything to be successful.
