In 1910, American Sonora Smart Dodd heard a sermon on Mother’s Day and felt that the work of parents was not equally recognized.

She was particularly fond of her father because her father, Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, raised her and her five siblings alone.

Smart Dodd reached out to the Ministerial Alliance in Spokane, a town near Washington, United States, where Sonora was originally from, and suggested his own father’s birthday, June 5th, for the celebration. Allianz chose the third Sunday in June by consensus.

The celebration was made official by US President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966 and from there it spread throughout much of the world.

Father’s Day in Mexico

In Mexico, it was celebrated with less intensity in the 1960s; However, it has been celebrated more clearly in the last few decades, as the generations of fathers who embrace their paternity and share parenting with their mother have increased.

The common upbringing and responsibility for children is a relatively new model in Mexican society, as the model was based on the breadwinner for many years and the woman was solely responsible for bringing up the children.

Shared responsibility

Parental work has increasingly involved the parents as well: men can now be found in school assemblies and the changing table for diapers is already in the men’s toilets in various public places.

This social change represents a great step forward in building fairer societies in which Father’s Day has a special meaning, as lovable as Mother’s Day, when the children – because we are all – have received the care, affection, appearance and food of our parents.
