August 26, 2020

The US Department of Commerce has added 24 Chinese companies to the list of companies that are restricted due to their security risks, in particular for cooperation on Beijing’s sovereign rights in the South China Sea.

The firms, including several subsidiaries of China Communications Construction Company, reportedly worked together to build and militarize the man-made islands that Beijing began building in disputed waters in 2013. a “provocation” in the eyes of Washington.

US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross has issued a statement estimating that companies have played a “significant” role in this work and must therefore be “held accountable”. With this in mind, he recalled that both the United States and several of China’s neighboring countries have condemned such activities.
