Venezuelans abroad can pay for the pass with Bitcoin

June 24, 2020

Venezuela’s Administration, Identification, Migration and Immigration Service (SAIME) would accept Bitcoin (BTC) payments to receive the Venezuelan passport. The information was released about Reddit in a post published on Wednesday, June 23.

The news soon reached Twitter, where some Venezuelan users abroad confirmed the information. After this confirmation, Venezuelans interested in the procedure can complete both the application for a new passport and the so-called “extension”, which adds two additional years to their expired passport.

“I only checked it personally and it is absolutely true. #Venezuela, the immigration service, accepts Bitcoin for payments. Renew your passport or apply for an extension, ”wrote the user identified as BTCLovera on Twitter.

It is important to note that in the Caribbean country payments for this type of procedure could already be made with Chavismo’s pseudo-cryptocurrency, the petro. So far, the other option available has been to use Bolivar through the National Bank.

It is striking that the option is apparently not available in Venezuela. The author of the original post on Reddit also noted that he could not confirm the option a few hours after it was published.
