Venezuelan Foreign Minister Félix Plasencia on Monday denounced the United States for denying him the right to actively participate in the United Nations system for “unilateral abuse”.
For Plasencia, this right of his country has been “disgustingly violated” and has prevented Venezuela from honoring the payment of its UN membership for 2021, reports the newspaper “Últimas Noticias”.
“This aggression threatens the sovereignty of a country that has engaged in struggle to ensure the well-being of its people,” Plasencia said.
On his Twitter account, Plasencia published that “the unilateral sanctions imposed by Washington prevent Venezuela from meeting the international financial commitment of membership in 2021”.
In his opinion, preventing Venezuela’s participation “is in blatant violation of international law and its own founding charter”, and has asked the organization’s Secretary General, António Guterres, “for his maximum support” to complete the payment of the commitment corresponding to the year 2021 .
The minister has agreed that Venezuela will be able to meet its financial obligations to the UN, which will allow it to retain its “sovereign voice” in “the intergovernmental processes of the General Assembly” and other bodies of this multilateral organization.
