The Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza on Thursday condemned the presence of the US destroyer “USS William P. Lawrence” 16 nautical miles off the Venezuelan coast, some 25 kilometers.
In a statement posted on his Twitter account, Arreaza described Washington’s move as an “unpredictable and childish provocation” by the United States Southern Command.
He has emphasized that “the armed forces conduct systematic and permanent patrols in their sovereign and judicial waters in order to combat the scourge of drug trafficking effectively”.
“The use of a warship with a long-range missile capacity to carry out suspected operations of this type is deeply conspicuous,” the text reads. “It is clearly a deliberate act of provocation that is unpredictable by others and childish, which shows the lack of rigor of the United States Southern Command.”
