Uruguay announces the “personal and voluntary” return to classrooms from June 1st

May 22, 2020

Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou announced this Thursday the “personal and voluntary” return to class as of June 1 as part of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We are returning to a fundamental aspect of life that is our children’s future,” said Lacalle Pou, who added that physical distance will be “key” and appealed to “responsible use” of freedom.

“We are convinced that the risk is minimal and that there must be the will of the parents to decide whether the children should participate or not,” said the Uruguayan president.

At a press conference, Lacalle Pou explained in detail that the reactivation of the school year will take place personally on June 1st, 15th and 29th of the same month. In this sense, he emphasized that reactivation is “progressive”, which is what the government is most concerned about.
