At least 18 people have died and eleven others were wounded by an attack by armed men on a refugee camp in the city of Nguetchewe in the far north of Cameroon last Sunday, United Nations for Refugees (UNHCR).

UNHCR spokesman Babar Baloch said the attack took place in the early morning hours of August 2, when men armed with explosive devices, including grenades, attacked the settlement, which has around 800 internally displaced people.

“Around 1,500 people, including fearful residents of the host communities, fled to the nearby city of Mozogo for security reasons,” Baloch said, according to a statement.

Baluch recalled that “the local communities in this impoverished area are usually the first to provide emergency aid to those fleeing the growing insecurity and violence in the area that covers Lake Chad and northeastern Nigeria.” “They share with them the few resources they have,” he said.
