Ukraine suspends all diplomatic contacts with Belarus

August 28, 2020

The Ukrainian government has suspended all diplomatic contacts with Belarus due to the crisis sparked by the elections earlier this month, in which Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko reaffirmed his mandate amid criticism of fraud by the opposition.

The Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dimitro Kuleba reported on Thursday on the break in relations and compliance with the European Union’s declaration on the situation in Belarus in favor of opposition protesters.

“Resuming contacts between the two countries will be discussed when Ukraine is certain that it will not suffer any reputational damage,” he said in the comments collected by Ukrinform.

“After learning that the Belarusian authorities had resorted to violence against peaceful demonstrators, I personally initiated a statement by the Foreign Ministries of the Lublin Triangle (Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine) condemning the violence,” said Kuleba.
