Ukraine joins countries closing their airspace for flights from Belarus

The Ukrainian government this Friday announced Kiev’s decision to join countries closing their airspace to flights from Belarus after Minsk on Sunday ordered a flight covering the route between Greece and Lithuania to stop an adversary.

The executive has indicated that the decision, which will take effect on May 29 at 00:00 (local time), was adopted during an extraordinary meeting during the day, according to a statement the executive posted on its website.

He also stressed that Ukrainian airspace will be banned for all aircraft registered in Belarus and stated that the authorities will take the necessary measures to inform Minsk of this decision.

On May 23, an Irish airline Ryanair, traveling from Athens to Vilnius, landed in Minsk, where exiled opposition journalist Raman Protasevich and his Russian friend Sofia Sapega were arrested by the Belarusian authorities.
