Two Taiwanese soldiers were killed in a helicopter accident that occurred during Thursday’s Han Kuang military exercises to defend themselves against a possible “invasion” of China on the island.
The Taiwanese Army has reported that the OH-58D helicopter has crashed for reasons unknown at Hsinchu Air Base. The pilot and copilot were taken to a nearby hospital, but eventually died.
According to the Taiwanese news agency CNA, firefighters had to travel to the air force base to extinguish the fire that had broken out after the impact.
Taiwanese President Tsai Ing Wen has declared the accident “sad”. “I want to express my condolences to their families. It is a great loss to our armed forces. We all share their grief,” he said on Twitter.
