Two members of the Colombian National Police were killed in an attack on Thursday in the north of the country in the Bolívar department, and the authorities have already assumed that it was a new action by the National Liberation Army (THEN).
The victims identified as Mayor Robinson Cardona Arboleda, 37, and patrol officer Yehison Vásquez Martínez, 34, were attacked in the Norosí municipality. Both were on patrol on a motorcycle when they were attacked by at least four men.
The authorities suspect that guerrillas from the front of ‘Luis José Solano Sepúlveda’ of the ELN were behind this attack, according to the newspaper ‘El Tiempo’. Colombian President Iván Duque has also pointed out that there is information that “presumably” points to the guerrillas’ authorship.
Duque condemned this “painful event” and referred to Cardona and Vásquez as “home heroes”. “They were shamefully murdered in the service of terrorists who wanted to silence their presence,” lamented the president, who insisted that “these events will not go unpunished.”
