At least two members of the Palestinian Authority’s military intelligence service and one suspected member of Islamic Jihad died on Wednesday evening in a covert operation by the Israeli security forces in the city of Jenin in the West Bank, the authorities reported on Thursday.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health has indicated that the agents killed during the operation are Agents Adham Yaser Eleiui and Taisir Ayasa, as well as Yamel al Amori, a member of Islamic Jihad who is suspected of being behind several attacks in recent months stand.
Israeli agents in plain clothes entered the city to arrest Al Amori and another suspect near the Palestinian Authority military intelligence headquarters in Jenin, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA.
The operation resulted in a shootout in which a third Palestinian agent was seriously injured, an event strongly condemned by Palestinian Authority Presidency spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina, who accused Israel of violating international law and fueling tension .
Abu Rudeina has blamed the Israeli government for the possible consequences of the incident and called on the international community to protect the Palestinian people before again denouncing the settlement expansion and settler incursions into the West Bank.
For their part, the Israeli Border Police have highlighted that the operation was launched to attempt to arrest two people suspected of being behind several armed attacks over the past few months, adding that a gunfight broke out during that operation, after barricading themselves in a building.
The shooting alerted Palestinian agents in the area who moved to the scene and opened fire on the undercover Israeli agents without it being clear at first whether they knew they were members of the security forces as they were dressed in civilian clothes, as reported by the newspaper “The Times of Israel”.
The incident came less than a month after Ahmed Daraqme, a member of the Palestinian intelligence service, was shot dead by Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint in the West Bank after agents mistook him for an attacker. Another Palestinian agent was seriously injured in the incident.
