At least two people have died in Italy from the heavy rains caused by Storm ‘Alex’, which caused winds and floods of an intensity rarely seen in northern Italy and southern France.
A man fell in his car in a river in the Cuneo region on the border between Italy and France and died. The other victim is a firefighter who died in Arnad, in the Aosta Valley, when a tree fell from the strong wind. In addition, two bridges collapsed in the Piedmont region.
In France, near the city of Nice, at least eight people are missing due to flooding, including two members of the fire brigade.
It is estimated that more than 500 milliliters of precipitation fell on the populations in these deep valleys in just ten hours, which corresponds to a normal rainy year in the region.
