Turkey reports of 12 Kurdish militiamen neutralized in operations in northeast Syria

May 3, 2020

At least 12 members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and People’s Protection Units (YPG) have been “neutralized” in northeastern Syria, the Turkish Ministry of Defense reported using a label that merges dead, wounded or captured.

“Our special forces neutralized 12 PKK / YPG terrorists who opened fire while trying to enter Operation Manantial de Paz,” the Turkish army said in a statement.

This operation was launched by Turkey in October last year to remove Kurdish militias from their border and to delimit a “safe area” that can accommodate thousands of Syrian refugees who remain on their territory.

The Turkish army has intensified its operations against the PKK in both the country and northern Iraq since the ceasefire between the government and the armed group was broken in July 2015.
