Trump takes a malaria drug with no proven effectiveness against the corona virus for prevention

May 19, 2020

US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he has been taking hydroxychloroquine for a week and a half, a powerful malaria drug that has not been scientifically proven to work against the coronavirus.

Trump has said that he consulted with a White House doctor about whether he could take the medicine, but told him it wasn’t recommended because he hadn’t even tested positive for coronavirus.

“I asked him what he thought. He said, ‘Well if you want,’ I said, ‘Yes, I want to take it,'” Trump said himself in statements to the press.

Trump is taking this medicine preventively with a zinc supplement, based on the good opinions of health workers who are fighting the coronavirus epidemic in the first place and who have used hydroxychloroquine.
