Trump compares himself to Churchill to defend himself for downplaying the importance of the coronavirus

September 11, 2020

US President Donald Trump on Thursday compared the fact that he initially minimized the severity of the new coronavirus to the words of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who reassured the population during the Nazi bombings on London in World War II.

Citing a historical inaccuracy, Trump said Churchill “often went to a roof in London and spoke there” during the Nazi bombings on the British capital.

“He always spoke calmly,” said the president during a campaign rally in Michigan, adding, “We did well and did a job like no other.” Churchill watched the Nazi bombings on London from a rooftop, but there is no record of making any speeches during those speeches.

The president is in the spotlight after admitting in March that he deliberately downplayed the severity of the new coronavirus to avoid panic, says journalist Bob Woodward in his next book.
