At least three “volunteers” recruited by the Burkina Faso authorities to assist in counter-terrorism security operations were killed in an attack by unknown armed people in the northern region on Sunday, security sources have confirmed.

These sources, quoted by the Burkinabe news portal Infowakat, indicate that the attack took place in the town of Hitté in the municipality of Titao, where a position of the “volunteers” was attacked by an armed group.

The attackers also set several shops and houses on fire as part of the attack, with no information about the deaths of civilians in the incident. There is currently no claim to authorship of the attack.

Burkina Faso has seen a sharp increase in terrorist attacks since 2015, including that in April 2021, which killed Spanish journalists David Beriáin and Roberto Fraile and Irish national Rory Young.

The rise in attacks by jihadist groups has resulted in a record number of internally displaced people in Burkina Faso, totaling 1.3 million people in about two years, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in July. .
