Three men of Spanish nationality have died and a fourth is missing after suffering an accident while canyoning in the Parlitobel gorges in the Swiss canton of San Galo, regional police reported.
The group was caught by a storm in full excursion on Wednesday afternoon as they made a descent without a guide. A police spokesman, Florian Schneider, said, according to the public television station RTS, that “the group was traveling privately”.
Ambulance services carried out a widespread operation on Wednesday, but weather conditions forced them to suspend the chase until that Thursday morning, when the three bodies had already been found. The security forces have cordoned off the area while these tasks continue.
Sources from the government delegation in Navarre, which three of the victims came from – a fourth person was born in Bilbao – have assured that the group consisted of six people in total, but the only two women chose to return to the hotel before the incident occurred .
The two women received psychological care at the hotel, while the Spanish consulate has already begun repatriation procedures, sources consulted by Europa Press have assured.
