Those accused of murdering journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancé in Slovakia are not pleading guilty

July 31, 2020

The three accused of murdering investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancee Martina Kusnirova in 2018 did not plead guilty this Friday to a hearing at which the defense presented its final arguments.

Businessman Marian Kocner and the other three involved, Alena Zsuzsova, Tomas Szabo and Miroslav Marcek, declined an agreement with the prosecutor in December to reduce their sentence and ensure that they were innocent.

During the day, Kocner, who is thought to be the “pioneer” of the murders, asked that the media and politics remain marginalized, and asked the court to pass a judgment based on “undeniable facts and evidence”.

For their part, Zsuzsova and Szabo reiterated their innocence, asked the court to order their release, and stated that they would not be present on August 5, when the sentence was due, as the Slovakian newspaper ‘Dennik N’ reports.
