August 28, 2020

Brazilian Vice President Antonio Hamilton Mourao questioned the severity of the fires in the Amazon this Friday and emphasized that the proportion was very small, like “a needle in a haystack”.

“The Amazon is five million square kilometers, 24,000 heat sources mean there’s roughly one source for every 200 square kilometers,” he clarified before insisting that it’s like finding “a needle in a haystack” during what is sold to the whole world that “the jungle is on fire”.

In a video conference, the Vice President referred to the official data of the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), which, according to the newspaper “O Globo”, had discovered 24,633 sources of fire in the region by August 26th.

While August is not over yet, that data is the worst for this month in the last decade, beaten only by last year’s record when 30,900 eruptions occurred.
