The USA will open its land borders with Mexico and Canada to the vaccinated from November

The United States will open its land borders with Mexico and Canada to people who have received the full vaccination program beginning in November, according to senior officials.

This measure, which will allow the resumption of non-essential travel such as tourism, will be officially announced in the coming days and is in line with Washington’s decision announced in September to allow air access for people from the EU and others. This new rule implies a relaxation of the bans that have been in place for more than 18 months and is being implemented gradually, with a first phase granting access to travelers who have been vaccinated at the beginning of November without any significant cases; from January 2022, all travelers will be asked for vaccinations, both essential and non-essential.

A senior administration official said the phased approach would give important travelers such as truck drivers “enough time” to get vaccinated.

The purpose of the changes is to revitalize international travel ahead of the holiday season and respond to complaints from people living in border communities who criticized the United States for imposing different rules on air and ground access.

The new policy will end non-material travel restrictions, which were first enforced in March 2020, even though Americans had no return home restrictions. The new regulation also applies to cross-border ferry traffic.

More details on how the measure will work has yet to be finalized, according to senior officials who have requested anonymity to drive changes in the Department of Homeland Security’s policy, the agency reported to Bloomberg.

The changes are independent of the government’s policy of evicting migrants illegally crossing the border, as former President Donald Trump’s mandate public health ordinance, which allows for the rapid evacuation of 958,000 migrants, remains in effect.
