The US studies are imposing further sanctions on Belarus and calling on the government to “end the violence”.

The United States announced on Tuesday that it would continue to impose sanctions on Belarus while calling on the country’s government to “end the violence” and expressing concern over the “kidnapping” of opposition leader Maria Kolesnikova.

In a statement, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said sanctions would be directed against those involved in “human rights abuses and repression” in Belarus.

“The United States, in coordination with our partners and allies, is considering additional specific sanctions to promote accountability for those involved in human rights abuses and repression in Belarus,” he said.

In this sense, Pompeo recognized the “courage” of the Belarusian people to “peacefully assert their right to elect their leaders in free and fair elections in the face of unjustified violence and repression by the country’s authorities”.
