The US regrets France and the UK abstaining from extending the embargo on Iran

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo regretted that neither France nor the United Kingdom supported the US resolution last Friday to extend the arms embargo against Iran.

“It is a pity that the representatives (on the UN Security Council) of France and the United Kingdom did not support an initiative called for by the countries (of the Persian Gulf) and by Israel,” Pompeo said at a press conference together with Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz .

“I am very sorry,” added Pompeo after the failure of the initiative, which received only two votes in favor, two against and eleven abstentions.

Only two of the 15 member states supported the document (the United States and the Dominican Republic); Two members voted against (Russia and China) and eleven refused to take a particular position, including London and Paris, who have become the last major European allies in the nuclear deal with Iran, from which the United States distanced itself.
