United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has ordered the suspension of charter flights to Cuba to respond to “abuse of the regime” on the island itself and its interference in the Venezuelan crisis.
“He has asked the Department of Transportation to suspend private charter flights to all Cuban airports, including Havana,” the head of US diplomacy announced in a statement released by the State Department on Thursday.
Pompeo stated that “this measure will suspend all charter flights between the United States and Cuba for which the Department of Transportation is responsible, with the exception of public charter flights approved to and from Havana and other private charter flights approved for medical emergencies and rescue and other travel deemed necessary in the interests of the United States. “
The aim is “to cut and limit the income that the Cuban government receives from landing fees, stays in hotels of the regime and other income related to travel.”
