US diplomacy blocked a Security Council statement on the situation in Jerusalem during the emergency meeting on Monday at the UN headquarters in New York.
The Norwegian delegation presented a joint text condemning all forms of violence and calling on the parties to restore calm.
The text was modified to reflect the launch of missiles and incendiary devices against Israeli territory and received the support of 14 of the 15 members of the Security Council. The United States asked for more time and eventually did not support the initiative.
Meanwhile, the US State Department has condemned the firing of rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory as an “unacceptable escalation” of violence.
State Department spokesman Ned Price has “strongly condemned the projectiles fired by Palestinian militias” and has defended Isarel’s “legitimate right to defend himself, his people and his territory”.
Price made no mention of the Israeli retaliation bombs on Gaza, which killed nine people, including three minors.
In addition, Price has uncovered “several initiatives” with both Israel and the Palestinians to reduce violence and recalled Washington’s support for a negotiated two-state solution.
