US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has condemned the one-year postponement of the September 6 general election in Hong Kong and has called for a review.
“The United States condemns the Hong Kong government’s decision to postpone the next legislative election by a year … there is no valid reason for such a long delay,” said Pompeo in a statement on Saturday.
The Foreign Minister has criticized Beijing’s action and assured that it is likely that Hong Kong “will never vote again”. He also argued that China “has no intention” of upholding commitments made with Hong Kong and the United Kingdom.
“For decades, people in Hong Kong have repeatedly demonstrated their desire and ability to hold free and fair elections,” said Pompeo, who stressed that elections should be held “as close as possible” on September 6th. .
