For its part, the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) has specified in a statement that what happened in Elad “is the result and a reaction to the escalation of the crimes of occupation and terrorism against the countries, peoples and Islamic holy places Palestinian Christians.

According to witnesses, two men threw themselves on passers-by in a city park. One of them carried a knife and another appeared to have a pistol, although shots have been ruled out.

The attack was not only welcomed by Hamas, but also commented on by Islamic Jihad, which described it as a “heroic operation” in retaliation for recent events on the Mosque Esplanade.

“Our people will continue their struggle and defense of Al-Aqsa Mosque by any means necessary. Their attacks will hit the Zionists and settlers wherever they are,” Hamas spokesman Abd al Latif al Qanou said.

Islamic Jihad also expressed this sentiment, describing it as a “heroic operation” in response to “the red lines” that the “gangs of settlers” dared to cross when they “desecrated” the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

For its part, the European Union condemned the attack, which it described as “terrorist”, and expressed its condolences to the victims, whom it wishes a speedy recovery, and their families.

“The European Union stands by Israel and its people at this difficult time. This violence has to stop. The European Union remains firmly committed to preventing and combating terrorism,” he said in a statement.

Jerusalem has been the scene of a rising tension since April, when celebrations of Ramadan, Holy Week and the Jewish Passover coincided, amid a ramping up of Israel’s security operations following March’s attacks that claimed a fortnight of lives.

As a result, the army has intensified its operations in the West Bank, conducting a series of raids that have only dampened the mood and provoked a series of confrontations that have left at least thirty Palestinian citizens dead.
