The United States has taken over the presidency of America’s Summits this Friday as it will host the event to succeed Peru in 2021, the Organization of American States (OAS) reports.
In a virtual ceremony, Deputy Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere, Michael Kozak, emphasized that his country would continue to work with the OAS on “defending democracy”.
“This includes efforts to restore democracy in Venezuela and end the suffering of Venezuelans under the illegitimate Maduro regime. It also means restoring democracy in Nicaragua and holding the Cuban regime accountable for its abuses,” he said a statement from the organization. Release.
OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro congratulated Peru on its work at the forefront of the process and wished the United States happiness at the top of its management. “The Inter-American Democratic Charter will be 20 years old in 2021 and will serve as inspiration for the countries of the hemisphere when the 9th Summit takes place under the Presidency of the United States,” he said.
