The United States is making its citizens aware that they are at increased risk of arbitrary arrest in China

The U.S. State Department has changed its travel recommendations to China to alert its citizens and residents that there is an increased risk of arbitrary detention by the authorities, as well as travel bans and lengthy interrogations.

In a security warning released on Saturday, the State Department specifically mentioned the risk of arrest or deportation on grounds such as “sending critical private electronic messages” against the government.

“American citizens can be detained without access to US consular services or information about their alleged offense,” the release said.
