The United States was “worried” Tuesday that the Filipino journalist and director of the Rappler news portal, Maria Ressa, and her professional partner Reynaldo Santos were convicted of cyber-defamation.

“The United States is concerned about the ruling against journalists Maria Ressa and Reynaldo Santos,” said State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus in a statement.

In this context, he called for a “solution” to the case that would strengthen “the long-standing commitment of the United States and the Philippines to freedom of expression, including for press representatives”.

For critics, the historic lawsuit against Ressa y Santos is a new attack by Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte against freedom of the press.
