The United Nations is calling for an investigation into the deaths from pandemic riots in Latin American prisons

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, called on Tuesday to investigate the deaths that have occurred in prisons across Latin America in recent weeks to protest against the lack of protection against protection Spread of the corona virus in prisons.

In the worst incident of this kind to date, around 50 people died last Friday in an uprising in the Venezuelan prison in Los Llanos. There were also protests with fatalities in Peru and Colombia and riots in Argentina, Mexico or Brazil, but without fatalities.

“The scale and severity of the above events seem to indicate that in some cases states have failed to take adequate measures to prevent prison violence,” said Rupert Colville, spokesman for the High Commissioner.

Colville has pointed out that “state agents have committed violations of violence in their attempts to regain control of these facilities” and recalled that in these contexts, violence is always in accordance with the principles of legality, necessity, Proportionality and must not apply discrimination.
