The UN warns that armed groups in Colombia are using detention to gain territory

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, warned this Friday that armed groups operating in Colombia have used the detention to expand their territorial control, leading to more deaths among leaders, social and activists.

“Armed groups as well as criminal gangs seem to be taking advantage of the fact that most of the population is limited to increasing their presence and control over the territory,” said Rupert Colville, spokesman for the high commissioner.

Colville has drawn attention to the situation in the Cauca (southwest) region, where “fighting between security forces and armed groups and criminal gangs, including indigenous areas, has increased”.
