The UN reaffirmed that Zimbabwe would use Covid-19 as an excuse to suppress civil liberties

The United Nations once again denounced on Friday that the Zimbabwean authorities could use the coronavirus epidemic as a “pretext to restrict freedom of expression and association in the country”.

The United Nations is aware of several arrests of journalists, including investigative reporter Hopewell Chinono, who was arrested on July 20 for “inciting public authority” after expressing his support for national protests against government corruption on Twitter .

The UN also notes the arrest of opposition leader Jacob Ngarivhume, who called for protests last June.
