The United Nations opened its 75th session of the General Assembly on Tuesday in a “crucial” year, as the organization was largely due to the action of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
In an appointment that saw masked diplomats hold off multiple seats to protect themselves from COVID-19, Guterres has focused on getting the United Nations to respond to the “immediate effects” of the pandemic with “reinforcement” health systems and support for the development and equitable distribution of treatments and vaccines. “
He has also called for preparation to “build” a “strong recovery” on the basis of the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement. To these challenges, Guterres has added peace and security, disarmament, human rights, gender equality and sustainable development.
He also highlighted the expectations the world has had of the United Nations on the occasion of its 75th anniversary, as it is the main platform for multilateralism and international cooperation.
