The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, criticized the Israeli government’s plans to enforce its sovereignty in occupied areas of the West Bank and warned of the possible consequences. “Annexation is illegal. Period,” he decided.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains committed to officially annexing part of the West Bank in July, despite criticism from various Palestinian movements and suspicion from much of the international community.
Bachelet has repeated that “any annexation” violates international law, “whether it is 30 percent from the West Bank or 5 percent.” For this reason, he has asked Israel to “listen to former authorities and generals, and several voices from around the world,” who urge them not to continue this “dangerous” road.
The former Chilean president issued a statement warning that “the exact consequences of the annexation cannot be predicted”, but expected that “it will” likely be “catastrophic” for both the Palestinian and Israeli people. Even “for the entire region,” he added.
