The UN celebrates the election pact in Bolivia and pledges its support

August 15, 2020

The United Nations Secretary-General’s personal envoy for Bolivia, Jean Arnault, this Sunday expressed his approval of the pact that ratifies the holding of elections in Bolivia next October.

Interim President Jeanine Áñez this Friday ratified the law setting the deadline for holding the general elections on October 18 after several months of controversy with the Bolivian unions with the Central Obrera Boliviana (COB), which called for its celebration in September and had blocked the country’s roads.

For the United Nations, ratification of the date is a “fundamental achievement” as these elections are essential to ensuring the democratic health of the country following the forced resignation of former President Evo Morales last year.

This law “helps to overcome the political divisions and uncertainties that troubled many sectors of Bolivian society, whether mobilized or not, and the international community itself.”
