The UK government announced this Monday that it would launch two new rapid tests in all national health care hospitals, nursing homes and laboratories that can diagnose COVID-19 in 90 minutes.
The UK executive said in a statement that these tests will begin next week and that the goal is to “vastly” increase the country’s diagnostic capacity before winter.
Because they deliver results so quickly, they hope to “break the transmission chain quickly,” said UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock.
In addition, new diagnostic tests can also diagnose influenza. “The fact that these tests can detect the flu and COVID-19 will be hugely beneficial as we approach winter so that patients can follow the right advice to protect themselves and others,” said Hancock.
