UK health officials have confirmed a total of 1,062 new cases of coronavirus and eight new deaths in the past few hours. This emerges from the latest official tally, released this Sunday, the day Prime Minister Boris Johnson ratified his wish to reopen schools in September compared to the opinion of some experts.
That balance tops Saturday’s 758 infections, but the death toll is significantly lower than the 55 reported the previous day.
In total, the country has recorded 46,574 deaths and 310,825 cases since the declaration of the pandemic. This is evident from the estimate the government posted on its website and updated this afternoon.
Hours earlier, Johnson announced that despite recommendations from some experts asking him not to order the start of the school year next month, reopening schools across the country has become a “national priority” as the pandemic is still active.
