The U.S. House of Representatives is examining Trump’s decision to suspend WHO funding

April 28, 2020

The President of the United States House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, Eliot Engel, announced on Monday that it has launched an investigation into President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend funding, which the country contributes to the World Health Organization (WHO).

In a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Engel pointed out that the Trump administration’s declaration to suspend the post, a decision announced in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, was “insufficient”.

The Democrat has stated that the committee he is chairing is “determined to understand the reasons for this self-destructive withdrawal of global leadership,” reports CNN television.

According to Engel, the State Department has provided Congress with “a discussion sheet (…) that contains few facts, no plans, and no explanation of how suspending WHO funding will save lives here or around the world” as Justification for the Trump Administration’s decision.
