Now we have to decide, for example, whether to go to sleep or do activities that we enjoyed after the work day. Do we work to live or do we live to work?

According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Mexico works 20% more hours than China, the US or other countries. With this in mind, we understand that some companies are not keeping the schedules of employees working under this virtual modality, resulting in high levels of stress at work.

The World Health Organization (WHO) advises that we speak of work stress when we are faced with situations that excessively test our knowledge and skills. That means when we are under demands and pressure that exceed our ability to react. This undoubtedly affects our performance at work and, of course, in other areas of our life, e.g. B. mentally, physically, emotionally, mentally and financially.

If this problem is not treated properly it is possible to portray the professional burnout syndrome also known as Burn out. In Mexico, 75% of the population suffer from it, according to a WHO report. The worst part is that it negatively affects our mental, physical, and emotional health. This causes a variety of diseases, such as: B. the overgrowth of small intestinal bacteria, better known as SIBO.

How is stress manifested in my body?

While professional challenges allow us to improve skills and abilities, the truth is that overloading them can cause us emotional and physical harm. Both factors are related, affect the state of mind and consequently reduce productivity in organizations by up to 25%.

Let’s think about an important project we’re working on. Our brain interprets the situation as a warning signal and prepares the body for it. Cortisol, the stress hormone, is released so that we are more alert and can survive such an opportunity. Now imagine the harm this does to us if it happens every day!

This can lead to an overgrowth in the number of bacteria found in our small intestine. SIBO, for example, according to a magazine article Gastroenterol Hepatol (NY) manifests itself in gas, abdominal pain or discomfort, fatigue and weakness.

How much does SIBO influence my working life?

If we suffer from it, we will be absent from work for a few days or even months. This is because this syndrome involves several medical studies before it is diagnosed and treated with proper treatment. And although it only takes place under high work stress, the truth is that we can be sick and are unaware of it.

The point is, we shouldn’t wait for this to happen. It is important to take care of our health and that of everyone we work with. In this way we can avoid, for example, 46% absenteeism in our organizations caused by SIBO and other diseases that occur when our bodies are exposed to excessive physical, mental, and emotional pressures.

If in an individual case we are unhealthy due to an illness or SIBO, the five areas of our life are seriously affected and unbalanced, which has a negative effect on our personal and professional life.

What do organizations do to reduce work stress?

For example, companies like Nike and Procter Gamble implement mindfulness meditation programs (Mindfulness meditation) to improve the emotional, mental and physical health of its employees. According to J. David Creswell, specialist in health neuroscience and psychoneuroimmunology, if we practice this practice regularly, we will achieve better stress management and a significant increase in our ability to concentrate.

Not far from it, LIVE 13.5 °, the first organizational happiness consultant in Mexico and Latin America, designs and implements various action plans to promote health care in work teams. Creative strategies are also suggested to encourage a more productive and positive work environment. Who doesn’t want to work and otherwise be satisfied with what they are doing?

The mind and body are inseparable: if one is not right, the other will not be right either. In the midst of the current uncertainty and the associated increase in work at home, it is imperative to have well-being and balance in the emotional, mental, physical, spiritual and financial areas of our lives. Achieving it is challenging, but the personal and organizational benefits are remarkable. Dare to improve your life, that of your employees and, by the way, be happy!
