The Turkish energy company Karpowership stops supplying Lebanon

The Turkish electricity company Karpowership announced on Friday that it would suspend its energy supply to Lebanon, which the company said was due to a lack of payments and a legal dispute over two of the barges used for this purpose.

Lebanese prosecutors decided to issue a confiscation order for the barges and to fine the Turkish company, which contributes around 370 megawatts, a quarter of the country’s external power supply, after Al Yadid television station suspected an energy-related corruption case the company’s reported contract.

The Turkish company denied any involvement and threatened the government to suspend supplies, as announced in a statement collected by CNBC Arabia.

The Lebanese economy has virtually collapsed with debt and a lack of foreign exchange to meet payments for even basic food and other import needs, including fuel to run their inadequate power plants.
