The Tunisian Prime Minister resigns on charges of possible conflict of interest

Tunisian Prime Minister Elies Fajfaj announced his resignation on Wednesday to “find a new way out of the crisis” hours after several parties filed a motion of no confidence against him.

Fajfaj has assured that he has submitted his resignation to the country’s president, Kais Saied, and reaffirmed his “commitment” to “continue to assume full responsibility”, as reported by the Tunisian state news agency TAP.

He has also claimed that the decision aims to avoid institutional conflict and maintain “the principle of morality in political life” after a parliamentary inquiry into him for alleged conflict of interest was initiated.

Hours earlier, Tunisian broadcaster Mosaique FM had reported that Saied asked Fajfaj to resign to find a solution to the crisis, although this point has not been officially confirmed.
