The Tunisian President appoints Hichem Mechichi as Prime Minister

July 26, 2020

The President of Tunisia, Kais Saied, has named Hichem Mechichi, who previously headed the interior portfolio, after the resignation of Elies Fajfa due to allegations of an alleged conflict as the country’s prime minister of interests.

Mechichi was not on the list of candidates proposed by the various parties and factions for the president, according to the state news agency TAP.

The new prime minister was elected Head of the Interior Ministry during the Fajfa government on February 19, and also held other government positions, including as adviser to the presidency and chief of staff of the Ministries of Transport, Health, and Social Affairs.
