“Ms. Pesante is visiting the official residence of the Argentine embassy in Quito for humanitarian reasons,” the Argentine Foreign Ministry reported in a statement this Thursday.
Pesante, who also served as Housing Secretary, was sentenced to eight years in prison in April this year for bribery offenses in the context of the “Bribery Case” (2012-2016) investigating alleged acts of corruption and illegal funding by the US Alianza PAIS movement between November 2013 and February 2014 from several multinational companies, including the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.
For its part, the Ecuadorian government has issued a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicating that “it has become known that Ms. María de los Ángeles Duarte” has entered the Argentine embassy in the Ecuadorian capital.
